INDIA WILL CONTINUE TO STRIVE TOWARDS ACHIEVING MINIMUM DETERRENCE - ANTONY

February 19, 2007 on 1:14 am | In General | 1 Comment

MPS FAVOUR BETTER DEAL FOR ARMED FORCES FROM 6TH PAY COMMISSION

The Defence Minister Shri A K Antony has said that the Government will take all steps to provide ‘minimum deterrence capability to the armed forces commensurate with the size and geo-strategic position of India in the world.’

Addressing the Meeting of the Consultative Committee attached to his Ministry, here today, Shri Antony said that modernisation of the armed forces is on course and in the next few years all the arms of our Forces will get the equipment and platforms required to achieve this minimum deterrence. He said, as a peace-loving nation, India does not favour any arms race. However, appropriate action is being taken and allocation of resources is being made after assessment of the environment at regular intervals to ensure that our armed forces are well prepared to face any challenge. Replying to a question from a Member of Parliament Shri Antony said our preparedness is not any specific country-centric.

Cutting across party lines, Members of Parliament were unanimous in agreeing with Shri Antony’s observation that the armed forces deserve a better deal from the 6th Pay Commission for their unflinching commitment and contribution to the safety and security of the nation. Shri Antony also said that the nation needs to take a second look at the service condition of the armed forces personnel in the changing times when traditional joint family structures are crumbling and market forces are determining the pay package of a wide spectrum of work force.

Speaking on today’s topic for discussion - Passive Air Defence, Shri Antony said that the Indian Air Force is making all efforts to meet the requirements of detection capabilities and potent weapon systems by maintaining, upgrading, overhauling existing systems and inducting new state-of-the-art equipment to replace old systems. He said the planning of Air Defence being a dynamic and an ever-changing process, review of assets vis-à-vis requirement is being done from time to time keeping our national security requirements in minds. He also said that efforts are underway to integrate civil and military radars to make optimal use of resources.

The Chief of Integrated Staff Committee (CISC) Lt. Gen. H S Lidder made a presentation on the subject.

Members of Parliament who attended the meeting were Shri Rameshwar Oraon, Prof. Ram Gopal Yadav, Shri M Shivanna, Shri Samik Lahiri, Shri S Bangarappa, Shri Shankhlal Majhi, Shri Syed Azees Pasha, Shri Madhu Goud Yaskhi and Shri Dharam Pal Sabharwal.

The Minister of State for Defence Shri M M Pallam Raju, the Minister of State for Defence Production Rao Inderjit Singh, the Defence Secretary Shri Shekhar Dutt, the Secretary Defence Production Shri K P Singh, Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister Shri M Natrajan, Director General Acquisition Shri S Banerjee, and various senior civil and military officials also attended the meeting.

Parl panel bats for soldiers, says raise their salaries

February 14, 2007 on 9:32 am | In General | No Comments

For a change, MPs from a broad spectrum of political parties are on the same side of the fence. None of them is contesting that armed forces personnel deserve better salaries and allowances.

During a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee attached to the Ministry of Defence, MPs favoured a better deal for soldiers from the Sixth Pay Commission. Defence minister AK Antony has time and again called for a better packages for soldiers who served the nation with unflinching commitment.

On Tuesday, Antony reiterated that the service conditions of soldiers needed to be improved especially at a time when market forces were determining the pay packages of a wide spectrum of work force.

The minister assured the committee that the government would take necessary measures to provide minimum deterrence capability to the armed forces commensurate with the size and geo-strategic position of India in today’s global order.

He also said that the modernisation of the armed forces was on course and in the next few years all the three services would get the equipment and platforms required for achieving minimum deterrence.

He said India was not in favour of triggering an arms race but it was allocating resources for military purchases after studying the environment at regular intervals to ensure that the armed forces remained prepared to face any challenge.

The shortcomings in India’s air defence capabilities also came up for discussion during the meeting. Antony said that the IAF was taking necessary steps to buttress its detection capabilities and plug the gaps in radar coverage. He said since the planning of air defence was a dynamic process, review of assets and requirements was being done from time to time keeping national security imperatives in mind.

He said efforts were underway to integrate civil and military radars to make optimal use of resources. The Chief of Integrated Staff Committee (CISC), Lieutenant General HS Lidder, made a presentation on the subject.

Attendees included Rameshwar Oraon, Ram Gopal Yadav, M Shivanna, Samik Lahiri, S Bangarappa, Shankhlal Majhi, Syed Azees Pasha, Madhu Goud Yaskhi and Dharam Pal Sabharwal.

The MoD was represented by minister of state for defence M.M. Pallam Raju, minister of state for defence production Rao Inderjit Singh, defence secretary Shekhar Dutt, secretary (defence production) K P Singh, scientific advisor to defence minister M Natrajan and director-general acquisition S Banerjee.

Hello Madhu garu,

I have been reading the news in Vaartha and Eanadu.
You are doing great! I really appreciate what you are
doing.

I guess guys in Congress party are not very happy with
your comments. I saw they complained to Sonia and
Digvijay about you. I think the next step for them
probably to expel you from Congress. This is just my
guess!

Anyway, I think it is time for you to co-ordinate all
the Telangana supporters from all the parties, good or
bad, and form some kind of alliance or party! I think
it is the right time for you. KCR probably will have
his own selfish motives and may not support you but I
think it is time to think atleast in this direction.
You have the vision. You understand poverty and help
poor people. I am sure you will succeed.

This is what I had in my mind too! We need a strong
leader who can drive people, who can understand the
ground situation and can understand the current
political scenario and very knowledgeable about the
current happenings both at the state and center level.
I can not think of doing anything at this time as I
will still be here for the next 4 years at the least
because of financial matters.

I wish to see more and more aggressive porture from
you in educating and picking up like-minded people and
marching forward to the goal.

Few more comments and thoughts for you on current
happenings which you already know.

1. Vijaz got 1100 cr and Vijayawada got 550Cr
development packages along with Hyderabad. Why don’t
any other cities in Telagana get any funds?
2. We should fight for scrapping Polavaram. Why don’t
anybody else talk about it. This project submerges all
the land in just Telangana area and the water goes to
Andhra area. We should make people understand this. If
you talk to any Telangana person, they do not know
anything about Polavaram. We should make people think
about the strategic direction instead of lower level
of thinking. At least we should make our local
political leaders understand this fact. Educating
people is the only thing that helps the situation.

Guys ossposing Polavaram in that affected area is just
for rehabilitaion and changing the project design. No
body is talking about the injustice to Telangana
region and the deceptive Andhrites in stealing water
by submerging our area.

Great, keep it up

Congress upset over Yashki’s stand

MP’s decision to attend Gadar’s pro-Telangana meeting irks party leadership

HYDERABAD: Nizamabad MP Madhu Yashki Goud’s decision to take part in a pro-Telangana meeting organised by Gadar at Palwancha in Khammam district and his remarks that he will attend anyone’s meeting for the sake of Telangana have upset the State Congress leadership.

Though the controversial MP had been reiterating his pro-Telangana stand quite often, not many had taken his moves seriously within the party all these days. Now, the MP’s reported remarks that he had decided to attend the meeting following the call given by TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao have irked the Congress leadership.

Explanation demanded

At a press conference here on Monday, Gone Prakash Rao, former Chairman of the APSRTC, and Mahesh Kumar Goud, ex-president of the NSUI, demanded an explanation from him as to whether the MP was still a Congress member.

Taking exception to his remarks, they asked him to clarify whether he would attend the meetings of the BJP or the Talli Telangana Party. They asked Mr. Yashki Goud whether he was keeping Rahul Gandhi posted of these developments as he claimed to be a close friend of the latter and getting away with his statements.

They advised him to toe the Congress line and not that of the TRS on the Telangana issue.

Yashki gets `backing’ from Keshava Rao

February 7, 2007 on 3:05 pm | In Telangana Issue, The Hindu, English | No Comments

HYDERABAD: APCC president K. Keshava Rao on Tuesday defended Nizamabad MP Madhu Yashki’s controversial remarks, saying he was explaining the party’s stand on Telangana at various meetings.

Asked as to what action the party was contemplating against the MP, Dr. Rao said at a press conference here that he had asked the MP to refrain from issuing controversial statements. Mr. Yashki had written to him, explaining the circumstances under which he made the remarks at a meeting at Palvancha in Khammam recently.

“He was only explaining the party stand on Telangana at meetings organised by other parties and organisations,” he said, adding Mr. Yashki had clarified that he had not been faulted by the party high command on the issue.

The APCC president condemned the alleged manhandling of Vijayawada Mayor Mallika Begum by corporators and advised them to behave.
